Welcome to Berkeley!


My name is Sara Hong and I am the head instructor for an English-enhancing class called "Perspectives," a 7-week class 

that starts on Sunday, Aug 12th, 2012.

Hosted by IGSM, our English class is designed to help international students improve communication skills needed for 

successful coursework and in-class presentations. By reading and discussing articles that examine contemporary culture, 

we will practice overcoming one of the most challenging aspects of the American classroom: active participation in 

discussion.  Students will receive practical tips on how to participate in in-class discussions, and receive helpful feedback to improve their communication skills in a comfortable, small group setting.

Our English class has been  very popular for the past 7 years with an enrollment of 60-80 students and 10-12 English 

teachers. This is a great opportunity for you to get a head start in improving your English before the school semester begins. Also, since many of the instructors are graduate students at UC Berkeley, you will be able to make connection to the 

campus and meet other students.

This is a free class and all instructors are unpaid volunteers. However, a nominal fee of $15 will be collected to cover the 

printing costs for the course material as well as for weekly refreshments.

This class is sponsored by IGSM (International Graduate Student Ministry,www.igsmonline.org), a UC Berkeley campus 

student group.

*Instructors: *Certified ESL teachers and UCB graduate students (native speakers)
